What is an HS Code?
The Harmonized System (HS) Code is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products. It was developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and is used by more than 200 countries and economies as a basis for customs tariffs and international trade statistics.
The HS is organized into 21 sections and 99 chapters, with over 5,400 six-digit codes. The first six digits are universal – the same everywhere in the world. Many countries add extra digits (8 or 10) for more detailed classification and duty calculation.
Using the correct HS code is essential for:
- Calculating import/export duties and taxes
- Completing customs declarations
- Determining product regulations and restrictions
- Trade statistics and market research
This free online tool contains the complete official HS 2022 nomenclature and is updated regularly.
